Top 12 Ways to Transform Biofuels Using Materials Already Around Us

Jim Lane, Biofuels Digest
Great ideas abound for new feedstocks and novel infrastructure. We admire so many of them: jatropha, carinata, switchgrass, sweet sorghum, blender pumps, systems-at-sea, and so much more.

But what about technologies that bolt-on a different processing unit, but keeps everything else the same. Or uses an abundant, odious and low cost feedstock?

That’s a frugal fuel. In these nefarious economic times, why not make do with what’s already in place?

Here are our Top 12 ways to transform biofuels using materials — usually waste by-products, or lower-value materials — already around us.

12. Glycerine

There’s a small market for glycerin as a building block material, but it has been overwhelmed by the supply coming from some biodiesel operators who have been producing a pure enough glycerine for sale into the industrial glycerin market — many biodiesel operators haven’t been able to produce it at sufficient purity and it has been distributed at very little value into the feed market, or even landfilled.

Then, along come numerous technologies aimed at converting glycerine from a low-value product into a high-value target material, such as isoprene (the main ingredient in synthetic rubber).

Technology to change village life - The Hindu

Technology to change village life
Y. MALLIKARJUN HYDERABAD, April 25, 2013

TECHVIL, a technology village to improve the quality of life of people living below poverty line through science & technology interventions is being established under a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) initiative at Mandollagudem Gram Panchayat in Nalgonda district.

As many as 24 villages have been chosen for the 12th Five Year Plan to improve the quality of life of one million people by covering a population of 50,000 surrounding each village.

These villages were identified due to high proportion of families living below poverty line. CSIR-800 seeks to enhance the income levels and improve the quality of life of about 800 million people in various parts of the country through the entire duration of the programme.

CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) is setting up TECHVIL at Mandollagudem in Choutuppal mandal.

Nayudamma Award 2012 - The Hindu Daily Coverage

Computers are dispensable: Rajanna

India has fastest growing cell penetration: Nayudamma awardee

V. Rajanna, president of IT and ITES Industries Association of AP, said there is no need to worry about far lower computer awareness and penetration in India when compared to that in some other developing countries in the world.

“India has only 1.6 personal computers per 100 people. In China, they have 6 PCs. But with the help of mobile phone, millions of Indians living in rural parts can be reached now,” said Mr. Rajanna, delivering the 17th Prof. Nayudamma Memorial Lecture here.

Mr. Rajanna was presented Prof. Nayudamma Award by the city-based Nayudamma Centre for Development Initiatives.

Central Leather Research Institute director A.B. Mandal presided over the meeting while NCDA director A. Jagadeesh introduced the awardee.

In his speech, Mr. Rajanna said that mobile phone can be used to reach millions of rural people who never have seen a computer and India has the fastest growing mobile penetration in the world with over 929 million mobile users reported by May 2012. Mobile phone can be used as a banking terminal and smartcards or biometrics can be used for authentication.

Transactions can be printed through a hand-held device.

Mr. Rajanna said that technology is being effectively used to many utilities and advantages of society as was envisioned by towering personalities like Prof. Nayudamma, whose contributions are a source of inspiration for many.

Audisankara College of Engineering and Technology chairman Vanki Penchalaiah and other institutions honoured Mr. Rajanna on the occasion.
